“They love and protect with their whole heart”
Trainable, loveable, and ferocious are all words that have been used to describe the working line German Shepherd Dog.
Anneka of Animal Watch is meeting several German shepherds, in different situations. She’ll be examining the strengths of this amazing breed.
German shepherds are large working dogs developed in Germany to herd and guard sheep. Because they are so smart and versatile, they are often used today in military and law enforcement but also make great family pets.
Two distinct forms of the German shepherd dog have emerged: The working line and the show line. Working lines are known for their strength and straight backs while show lines have been bred to have a sloped back.
Working line German shepherds should be stable and love to work, according to Protection Dogs Worldwide, which trains protection dogs. They love to learn and are obedient and amazing to watch.
Working line shepherds have lots of energy and love to be busy. They enjoy a challenge and require lots of time and attention because they are so high energy and love to have a job to do. But they also enjoy having fun and just being dogs.
They live around 12 years with the right care. Despite their working lines, they also form loyal bonds with their family and even love kids. They need training and socialization but can be a pleasure to own but need continual training and socialization.
Just like all dogs, there are different personalities within the working lines. Some are more high-energy and intense while others are more mellow and calm. But both are responsive, intelligent, and love to learn.
German shepherds can be trained to be protective but will also retain their loving nature toward their family, and that’s what Protection Dogs Worldwide specializes in. Their trained dogs will guard and protect and then go right back to being loving companions.
All German shepherds have protective traits, but protection-trained dogs are trained on how and when to react to threats. They take their job of protector seriously and will lay down their lives to protect their handler or family.
There are so many wonderful things to like about German shepherds. They make excellent pets for those that want to invest time into training and socializing them. They require lots of mental and physical stimulation, so they are not for everyone.
However, those lucky enough to share their life with a German shepherd, make loyal friends and companions. They are a lot of work but return that in equal measure of love and devotion. They are truly special dogs.
